Your guide to Bihać and the Una National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina

by Kathi Daniela

Are you planning a trip to Bihać or Una National Park? This little guide will tell you everything you need to know.

Una. The one. The magical one. The incomparable one. Legend has it that even the Romans were enchanted by the beauty of the river - they had never seen such colours before - and gave Una its name.

If you visit Bihać, your journey will probably also centre around the Una River, which rises in Croatia and then makes its way to Bosnia and Herzegovina before finally flowing into the Sava.

For the inhabitants of Bihać, their lives have long revolved around the river. It is both a lifeline and their greatest pride. In Bihać and the Una National Park, environmental protection is a way of life, and in many places the river is clear and clean enough to drink from.

Bihać itself, like the river of the Una-Sana canton, has also experienced a lot: Illyrians, Romans, Bosnian kings, Ottomans, Austrians, world wars, Yugoslavia and a siege during the aggression on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this guide, I'll tell you the most important things about Bihać, the most beautiful spots to admire the unique nature, sights you shouldn't miss and of course, as always, the best restaurants and accommodation.

What can you expect in Bihać?

How long should you plan for Bihać?

I would plan three days for Bihać. On the first day you can explore the city, on the second and third day the Una National Park or some sights in the surrounding area.

From Bihać, you can then continue your journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina - for example to nearby Banja Luka. You can also find more great places in Bosnia and Herzegovina here.

💡 My tip: Do you want to be reachable and also easily navigate to restaurants and spots that I recommend in my article? Then get an eSIM from Airalo. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the EU, which means you can't use your mobile data and roaming is expensive. With a Airalo data plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina but you'll be online as soon as you arrive. You can download the app here.

Taste the typical cuisine of the Krajina region

Bosanska Krajina, the Bosnian Krajina, has always been a border region between different empires and cultures - and this is still reflected in its cuisine and traditions today, whether in Bihać or Banja Luka.

The three rivers Una, Sana and Vrbas run through Krajina, so fish - especially trout - is often on the table. Other dishes that are typical of Krajina and that you should definitely try:

  • Trahana | In other parts of the country you will find it under the name tarhana, a soup made from dried dough balls, with beef or vegetable broth
  • Kvrguša | You will probably only find this dish here in the north-western part of Bosnia. Grilled chicken on a bed of dough with lots of sour cream
  • Kljukuša | A type of Bosnian potato pancake, here in Krajina flour is often added and it is torn up in the pan like Kaiserschmarren and served with yoghurt, cheese or sour cream

And it tastes best in these restaurants:

  • Čardak na Uni
  • Restoran Belvedere
  • Restoran "Sofra"
  • Kafeteria
  • Intima

My conclusion about Bihać and the Una National Park

In the meantime, I have been up to Bihać and of course to Una National Park several times, at different times of the year and with very different people - and each time I am absolutely amazed by nature. The waterfalls, the colour of the Una, the peace and tranquillity, it's all definitely worth a visit.

The only thing I would like to see is more outdoor activities, such as hiking or cycling tours. But like everywhere else in Bosnia and Herzegovina, tourism is constantly developing and I am confident that the offer in Bihać will also improve steadily. But even without a hiking tour, the region is definitely worth a visit!
