Coffee in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The history of coffee in Bosnia and Herzegovina begins with the Ottomans - they brought the brown beans with them and the first café opened in Sarajevo as early as the 16th century. From that moment on, the coffee grinders never stood still, and with the arrival of the Austrians, new varieties were introduced in addition to unfiltered Bosnian coffee.
Are you meeting up with friends? You want to say: We should chat again? Are you making an appointment for a meeting? Then there is only one correct phrase in Bosnia:Hajmo nach kafu!! (Let's go for a coffee).
And those are the best place to go for a coffee in Mostar:

💡 My tip: 💡 My tip: To be online and navigate easily from A to B, I use an E-Sim von Airalo - Serbia is not in the EU, which means that European roaming does not apply here. On Airalo, I can select different data packages of exactly the right length for my stay.
The best cafés in Mostar
Fabrika Coffee – Specialty Coffee & Snack
My go-to café when I'm in Mostar. Fabrika now has numerous locations all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, from Sarajevo to Banja Luka, and they serve excellent speciality coffee everywhere, from V60 to flat white or. The location in Mostar is also really special, in the stone courtyard of an old mosque. In addition to skilled baristas, there are snacks such as smoothie bowls and banana bread.
Café de Alma
Not in the mood for modern coffee? Then this charming café is just the place for you: Not only can you drink bosanska kafa here, but you can also learn how it's made. Get ready for a little journey back in time and for lots of new vocabulary in your coffee lingo, such as Džezva or Dočekuša.
Caffe Šećerlook
The very best view in Mostar? You have it from here! You can't get a better photo of the old bridges from many places in the city. But the atmosphere in Šećerlook tops the quality of the coffee - I'll be honest.
bar&resto Pozorišna kafana
This restaurant in Mostar's theatre was closed for a long time and has only recently reopened after a fresh renovation. Coffee and culture go hand in hand here, and there are also various local wines and delicious food.
Niđe veze
This local spot is great for a short break from sightseeing - there are fewer tourists and more locals sitting in the cosy garden. Especially on a warm summer's day, this café is not overcrowded, but still only a few minutes' walk from the old town.
Aldi – Caffe slastičarna
Coffee in Bosnia and Herzegovina simply has to be accompanied by something sweet - whether it's baklava from the Ottoman era or Sacher cake from the Austro-Hungarian period, the main thing is that it's sugary! You can find a great selection of different cakes and sweets here, Aldi is a real traditional café in Mostar.
Caffe bar Tecó
I wanted to include this café in Mostar primarily because of its many vegan options. Because I know that sometimes it's not easy to find vegan dishes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Desserts that you can't miss
In Herzegovina, the Mediterranean part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is a very special cake that you should definitely try: smokvara. This round cake is made from fig pekmez (a kind of compote), wheat and corn flour, as well as sugar, oil and water. A sweet and sticky affair, but definitely part of the real Mostar experience.

The best accommodation in Mostar
Mostar is roughly divided into the east and west sides, split by the River Neretva. The east side is home to the old bridge Stari Most and the UNESCO-protected Old Town, while the west side of the city is more modern, with street art, Shopping Malls und zahlreichen Restaurants.
